BOATING SAFELY WITH THE U.S.C.G AUXILIARY |
The United
States Coast Guard Auxiliary was created by act of Congress back in 1939
when threatening storm clouds of national concern were turning the Coast
Guard's attention to higher priority missions. Today, more than 28,000
American patriots are volunteer members of the Auxiliary performing virtually
every mission of the regular Coast Guard except those dealing with law
enforcement and military action. One of the most important tasks essentially
taken over entirely by the Auxiliary from the Coast Guard itself has been
the handling of Boating Safety, including classroom instruction and related
activities. Thousands upon thousands of boating enthusiasts across the
United States are trained every year by the Auxiliary through a variety
of offerings. These enthusiasts range from youngsters learning their first
lessons of boating, through those of varying levels of experience needing
to fulfill new regulations, to old salts wishing to become familiar with
the latest navigational technologies. The Auxiliary has classes and other
offerings for the general public meeting all those requirements and more,
ranging in cost from free to a nominal fee These classroom-based lessons
in Powerboating are offered at various times during the year in both refresher
and introductory formats ,with the introductory meeting the requirements
for Personal Water Craft (PWC) licensing in New York State In addition,
the introductory course offered is for young boaters (ages 10-17) through
which the young boater can earn the NY State Young Boater's Certificate,
without which it is illegal for a youngster to operate a power boat alone.
GPS/Navigation This course for adults (ages 17 & over) is taught by the
U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 18-06 .You will learn how to navigate
